Our sustainability policy prioritizes the protection of environment and human capital. Asahi Tanker strives to tackle these two issues for our continuous sustainable growth.
With regards to the environment, we aim for a 40% reduction of CO2 emissions from our overseas operations by 2030 from 2008 levels, and a 17% reduction from our domestic operations by 2030 from 2013 levels. To meet this goal, we have implemented initiatives to reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, such as building environmentally friendly vessels and using alternative lower emission fuels. We are active in the promotion of environmentally friendly electric vessels, pioneering the building of two all-electric tankers and a hybrid electric cargo vessel. We are also developing nature-based carbon capture by creating and restoring seaweed beds in southern Japan for the absorption of CO2. Moreover, we contribute to the clean energy related businesses by providing the experienced marine employees (seafarers) to operate transport vessels for engineers working on offshore wind power generation facilities. These initiatives are just the start – we are working daily to accelerate and expand our efforts.
For Asahi Tanker, our people are of the utmost importance. We have marine employees who work on our vessels in addition to employees on the ground. Our employees are diverse, and we have a zero-tolerance policy for any discrimination based on race, nationality, creed, or gender, etc. A wide variety of workstyles is available for employees such as teleworking and flexible work schedules. We also proactively communicate the rewarding nature of maritime transportation related work to foster engagement of our future members. We also put a heavy focus on employee development by providing a wide variety of training and study groups in the Company and educational programs in coordination with Marine Technical College.
We put our focus on five ESG priorities that are in line with our business activities for our SDG initiatives. In business areas where a safe social infrastructure is the highest priority, we will:
In addition, to establish a resilient foundation that can withstand any environmental changes, we will:
In a country surrounded by water, I take pride in the fact that shipping companies continue to play an important part in supporting the economy. Asahi Tanker will take the lead in making maritime transportation a sustainable industry as a company shaping the future of the seas, and continuously strive for sustainable growth for generations to come.
